Chairperson of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Benazir Bhutto assassinated in a suicide bomb attack after a rally at Liaquat Bagh.
- DEC 28, 2007
A high-level joint investigation team (JIT) is constituted in Punjab to probe the case after registration of FIR.
- JAN 4, 2008
Scotland Yard team arrives in Pakistan for inquiry into Bhutto’s death. The inquiry lasted 18 days and its findings were released on Feb 8 the same year.
- FEB 17, 2008
JIT presents its findings. Identifies five suspects but does not implicate former president retired General Pervez Musharraf for culpability in Benazir’s assassination.
- JULY 1, 2009
United Nations commission of inquiry into Bhutto’s death commences its activities. The UN report was not presented until April 15, 2010.
- AUG 6, 2009
Another JIT of the FIA re-investigates the case. Implicates Gen Musharraf and two senior police officers, Saud Aziz and Khurram Shehzad, as accused in the case.
- DEC 5, 2010
Prosecution submits challan and against Gen Musharraf and the two police officers.
- AUG 11, 2011
The police officers are taken into custody but obtain post-arrest bail from the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi bench.
- AUG 1, 2012
FIA issues red warrant against (R) Gen. Musharraf and requests Interpol for his arrest.

The FIA arrests Gen Musharraf.
